Just in Time with the Comment Spam Filter
Posted by Hans de Ruiter
It appears that the installation of Akismet into this blog a few days ago was just in time. Since then, Akismet has blocked 40-50 spam comments, all of which were links to a range of objectionable websites. So far Akismet's filtering has been a 100% success. However, so far, all comments posted since installation have been spam. Not a single legitimate comment has been posted.
It is interesting to note that those posting these spam comments work in an industry that is considered dirty and objectionable to society at large. I suppose that if one has no qualms about peddling objectionable material then one is also unlikely to have any problem violating other rules and etiquette. Abusing things such as comment posting functionality is something that most people do not do, simply because it is an abuse of a system, and it is wrong. Unfortunately there is a market for their dirt, and posting comments costs next to nothing.
If anyone else is having trouble with comment spam, I would recommend giving Akismet a try. It may not completely solve the spam problem, but it should at least remove the worst of it.
