R5xx Compositing is Done

R5xx compositing on Amiga OS 4.xI am pleased to announce that compositing for R5xx based cards (Radeon X1000 series) is now done. This marks a major milestone in the development of the RadeonHD.chip driver. Namely, full 2D graphics acceleration is implemented for an entire series of graphics cards. The screenshot below shows  Workbench with compositing effects enabled being displayed by a Radeon X1550 graphics card. As you can see, the errors that were present in the previous screenshot are now gone (the development log entry containing the previous screenshot is included in the image below for comparison).

Implementing compositing proved to be a major undertaking. As I said earlier, Amiga OS 4.x's compositing contains a powerful array of features, all of which must be implemented correctly by the driver. Added to this, a slight eror in the data sent to the graphics card could cause a freeze, requiring a hard reset. This makes debugging rather time consuming. Needless to say, I am glad that it is done, and working correctly.

With full 2D acceleration implemented for R5xx chipsets, it is now time to turn my attention to hardware accelerated blitter for R6xx/R7xx based cards.

  • Hi Magnetic,

Someone has already tried to plug such a card into a Pegasos II, but the firmware doesn't detect it properly. It appears to detect the bridge chip, but doesn't look at the graphics card behind the PCI-to-PCIe bridge (see http://hdrlab.org.nz/become-a-beta-tester/ for more). Peg2 users are out of luck for now.

I have tried contacting Genesi to ask about fixing the firmware, but have not had any success yet.

  • Hey this is really cool. Congratulations! Maybe I'll put os4 on my Pegasos 2 with a Radeon x1300 pci card.. will this config work? I'm sure there are no Peg2 Os4 betatesters yet! : )

  • Congratulations!!
This is a very big Christmas gift for all the Amiga community!
Thank you for your work on this so complicated (at least for me) stuff :)

  • @Seiya

Well, most people want to use a Radeon HD 2400 or HD 4350, and writing 3D drivers is a lot more work. Don't worry, we'll get there.

  • Very good news. HPNY (do you remember that virus? hehe)

  • great works, but finished 2D acceleration, shouldn't be better to turn your attention with 3D acceleration?

One day AmigaOS4 will have many 2D driver and no 3D good driver...

  • @geennaam

That depends on what you want to do. If you want to test the driver then go ahead and buy; if you want to use it for every day stuff, then you'd be better off waiting. You still need your existing Radeon 7000-9250 card since the driver is a work in progress (and there are no 3D drivers).

  • Fantastic progress, hope to see R600 news soon :)

  • Great work!

I noticed that the club3D 4350 is available. Does it make sense to buy one now and apply for beta testing or should I wait a little longer?
